Industrial Opportunities
Overview
Most of Newark's industrial development opportunities center around Port Newark, which is the largest seaport on the East Coast, the third largest port in the nation in terms of volume and the second largest in terms of value. Nearly $150 billion of cargo is shipped through the port each year – not surprising given the 21 million consumers in the metro area surrounding the port and the 100 million more within a one-day drive. The port has seen a 65% increase in traffic volume in recent years and the amount of cargo passing through the port is expected to double by 2020.
Plans are in the works for billions of dollars of improvements at the seaport, including larger cranes, expanded rail yard facilities, deeper channels and expanded wharves. Brick City Development Corporation is also working with the City of Newark, Port Authority of New York and New Jersey and industry representatives to craft a comprehensive strategy for the redevelopment of at least 250 acres of vacant or unproductive industrial land adjacent to the port.
