Location and Access

Newark Liberty International Airport

Overview

One of America’s top five busiest international gateways, Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) handles more than 30 million passengers annually and is home to 48 commercial airlines providing nonstop service to hundreds of destinations spanning the globe. It is a Continental Airlines hub, major cargo hub for FedEx, UPS and United Airlines and now ranks as the 10th busiest airport in the United States.

The airport is located just 13 miles west of midtown Manhattan – making it the closest airport to New York City – and is just a six-minute commute to downtown Newark via a monorail system called AirTrain Newark.  This train connects to Amtrak, NJ Transit and PATH trains so passengers can continue seamlessly to virtually any place in the world.

Owned and operated by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, the Newark airport covers more than 2,000 acres, has three runways and a helipad and encompasses three state-of-the-art terminals.  The Port Authority has invested billions of dollars in recent years to upgrade the terminals with improved shopping, dining, baggage claim, ticketing and parking.

Truly intermodal, Newark Liberty is also accessed by bus, including NJ Transit, Airporter and Olympia Trails, and by car, with two exits from the NJ Turnpike (Exit 13A and 14), an exit from I-78 (Exit 57) and regionally through Routes 1 and 9.  The airport also provides 17,000 spaces of on- and off-site parking and more than 2,000 hotel room s in the immediate vicinity.
