Small Grocer Initiative
Program Overview
The Small Grocer Initiative, one component of the Newark Fresh Foods Program, helps Newark small grocery store owners expand and build capacity to carry fresh fruits and vegetables in an effort to increase nutritious, affordable food retail options in Newark. As part of the initiative, Brick City Development Corporation provides technical assistance and grants from $5,000 to $20,000 to small local operators for the purchase of equipment, fresh food inventory and leasehold improvements. Participants may also apply for the Grow Newark Fund and other below-market loan products. Participants must operate a 500 – 6,000 square foot grocery store in Newark, NJ. All funding is conditional on the operator’s ability to increase the provision of fresh produce available to Newark residents.
